Philosophy and The Great Books go together like Milk and Cookies.
Every English class needs to be equipped with this. Read a Great Book. Have a Book Club and then discuss it. Look for the Perspective.
The purpose of the Great Books is to look for the Societal Perspective and The Self Defined within the Book.
It is NEVER relevant what any Author is trying to say.
I AM AN AUTHOR. And I am telling you, it does not matter what “The Author is trying to say.” Every English teacher has missed this point (because they are not Philosophers).
What matters is what YOU took away from the book. You read a book to find YOU in the book.
Who do you relate to? Who did you wish you could be? What would YOU do? How would YOU act differently?
Never look for the Author in the book. Look for yourself in the Book. And in the books where you cannot find you, well then… those books are not meant for you.
