In History, wherever we see the word “Legend” it is a marker to say that “There is Truth here, but we don’t know where it is.”
It is Oral Tradition that contains elements of Truth.
I have no doubt that, after Rome’s attempt of building their “Witch Trap” and destroying all Educational Systems (which were really Wizard and Magic Schools), a handful of Magi/Wizards did escape.
They would have lived in secret, studying in silence and as a hermit (most likely) and laying low until they were powerful enough to protect themselves.
Merlin fits this description beautifully.
The concept of a studious Scholar isolated alone in a castle… and then the rise of the 12 Ethics among King Arthur’s Court and his Knights at the Round Table (to preserve the 6th Ethic, Equal Footing) aligns flawlessly with this theory.
The Legend of Dragons and the Rise of Arcana at this time period very much suggests that some Wizards and Mages did escape the Conversion of Rome and they did pass on their studies.
Many of them would have explored and developed Magic incorrectly resulting in Black Magic that did (and it always does) Disintegrate. Only Integrated (Logical) Magic lasts.
And then, the era passed, the Legend was changed to Story. Story was called “Fiction,” and the Witch Trials put the Fear-Of-God (The Fear Of Rome) inside the People.
Magic had made a small “come-back” in the 10th Century.
It would not at all surprise me if:
- 1 – The Wizards were the Dragons
- 2 – A Dragon Graveyard is found in Great Britain
